How Does Botox Work?

How Does Botox Work
How can such a simple injection transform the look and feel of your skin? Botox is an extensively studied medical treatment, in part because of the amazing results it delivers.

The chemical contains very small amounts of a highly purified botulinum toxin protein refined from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum.

Bacterium? Don’t worry- the Botox that is injected to minimize your wrinkles contains the tiniest amount of the common toxin that is found in the forest and cultivated soils, in sediment of lakes, streams, and coastal waters.

It is injected into humans in such small concentrations that it works by preventing signals from the nerve cells reaching muscles, essentially leaving the muscles without instructions to contract, therefore paralyzing them.

Upon injection, Botox quickly eliminates the progression of wrinkles and fine lines. It generally takes three to seven days to take effect and it’s always best to avoid alcohol one week prior to treatment. In addition, Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications should be stopped at least two weeks before treatment to reduce bruising.
